Complete Guide to Settling in After a Move

Unpacking is one of the most exhausting parts of a move. You have packed all your things and moved them from your old home to the new one. You are already tired. You think it’s over, but now it is time to unpack. you may think of unpacking as the last but dreaded task you need to complete before you can enjoy your new living space. However, it’s not always like that. With some organization and planning, unpacking can be one of the easiest parts of your move.

If you want to take the stress out of this dreaded task and spend more time enjoying you new living space, these tips and tricks will help you have a smooth and organized unpacking experience:

STEP 1: Plan ahead

The unpacking process may not begin until you move to your new home. However, you can start making unpacking plans before you even begin to pack. Having a solid plan in place is one of the best ways to make the unpacking process easier. Here’s what you need to do:

  • Make a plan

The first thing you need is a well-organized, comprehensive plan in place. Some common ways used to organize moves are with colours or numbers. You have to pick a method and then stick to it consistently. All your moving boxes should be labelled properly according to the room they belong in. Also, create an inventory sheet that lists down what’s in each box. It may take more time to plan your move this way, but it will make things a lot easier for you when it is time to unpack.

  • Keep decluttering

Remember that not everything in your home needs to be packed and moved. You will probably have many items in your home that you don’t need, and now is the best time to donate, sell, or throw them. The more you declutter as you pack, the lesser unnecessary things you will move, and the less you will have to unpack once you’ve moved to your new home.

  • Pack your essentials in separate boxes

When you have arrived at your new living space, there are certain items that you will want to have immediate access to. Therefore, it is a good idea to pack these essential items in one separate box. Here are a few things you might need:

  • A pair of clothes
  • Toiletries
  • Cups, plates, and utensils
  • Chargers
  • Prescriptions

This is not a comprehensive list, so make sure that if there is anything else you will need to get through 24 to 48 hours before everything is unpacked, it is packed with the essentials.

STEP 2: Load the Moving Truck Room Wise

Moving day is here, everything is packed, and it is time to take it to your new home. You have to do it in a way that will make the unpacking process as painless as possible. Think about your new home’s layout and consult the moving plan that you made before you started packing. As you load boxes onto the truck, try to start with boxes containing items that will be placed in rooms in the back of your new home. Keep the boxes that belong to the same room grouped together on the moving truck, so that when you are unloading, it is easier to place the things where they belong.

STEP 3: It’s Time to Unpack!

Once everything is unloaded from the truck and organized into the rooms in your new home, it is time to start the big job i.e. unpacking. The first step is to clean, if you haven’t already. If you cleaned your new place before the moving day then you can skip this step. The goal is to focus entirely on unpacking without having to clean anything during the process. So, if there are any dusty shelves or dirty cabinets, clean them before you begin unpacking.

The next step is to unpack the furniture in each room. It is easier to arrange the large furniture items before the drawers are filled or the bed is made. So, this is the time to try different furniture layouts and make sure everything is where you want it to stay.

Finally, unpack the home in the following order:

  • Bathrooms
  • Bedrooms
  • Dining room
  • Living room
  • Entrance
  • Guest rooms
  • Wardrobes
  • Storage spaces

Once you are done unpacking, congrats! Now it’s time to get some take-out and enjoy your new living space. Just remember that unpacking is an exhausting job, but good planning and organization can make it a seamless process.
